Housekeeping

I've been playing around with the layout of the sidebar a bit (ooh, how exciting), added a few new links and shuffled the sections around. I like the alliteration of 'Verbal' and 'Visual', but couldn't think of a good V-word to title the section for those blogs that I read often which are quite popular/well known and read. Verbose will do as a descriptor for now, but suggestions are welcomed.

A new addition of note is the blog of Nebulaura, who has just entered the realm of blogging. Making a fine start so far...(says her current audience of one). :) If nothing else, she has a cat who looks eerily like Thomas the Tank, except with black marks rather than grey. And not quite so large.

I often post photos here, but I've been thinking that I would like to create a blog that is just for my photos. Stay tuned for further developments.

A Semiotic Moment - Language

Found in the form of a quotation from the Terry Prachett novel "The Colour of Magic":

That is to say: while it was true that they had just appeared in this particular set of dimensions, it was also true that they had been living in them all along.
It is at this point that normal language gives up, and goes and has a drink.

The bolded line (emphasis mine) is I think my favorite line in the entire book. The idea of language throwing up its hands in frustration (if language were to have hands, or a desire to drink - to be personified) at the impossibility of trying to describe the parallel dimensions of the universe (science fiction and otherwise). Such a great image.

And here is another! While looking to see what wikipedia had to offer by way of explaination for semiotics, look who has their own entry (this is mostly for you Saf, I'm guessing most other people who read this blog won't know) - Marcel Danesi. Thats awesome.

Stop.

Smell the roses.

Breathe in.

And out.

Repeat...

Up/Down

Up - employment

Down - hour plus commute daily

Up - time to unwind/decompress on the way home (often in the form of sleep)

Sleep is good. As are cats. So here is a combination picture, starring Thomas.

I am so glad it is the weekend.

Graffiti in Soho, May 2005

Oh New York. I love you too.

I would like for this to be a year of travel for me - already have some small excursions planned, to the Western Caribbean and San Diego, but I am in search of something more. Something with history. Europe... such a broad, general, hazy idea. More thought and planning is definitely needed (as how to work it around employment - or how to work employment around travel).

I want to see more of the world.

New Year...Sweet!

And what better way to start off a new year than with chocolate for breakfast? Can't go too wrong. My sister received a 1kg (yes, kilogram) Dairy Milk chocolate bar for Christmas, from a flight attendant friend who brought it back from England. Yikes ... and yum. :)
