City Mouse visits the Country

While I'm a city girl at heart, I enjoy a more rural setting from time to time .... so this afternoon my sister and I ventured north easterly to visit our other sister and her boyfriend at his house, which also happens to be a farm. They gave us a tour of the barn, hayloft, and sheds - kind of felt like those field trips you took in kindergarten to the farm. Still a lot of fun, too.

First there was Duke, the dog - who is, to quote Catherine, "not too clever". And truly, he isn't, although he's sweet. A German shepherd mix (mix of what, we don't know), who loves the snow, and will leap a foot or so in the air chasing after particles that have been kicked up. Apparently in the summer he doesn't know what to do with himself, with no snow to play with. He gave himself a nasty bump on the head this afternoon, as he came running into a dark shed after us, and ran smack into a trailer hitch with a loud clang (it was right at his head level). Poor (stupid) puppy ... he shook it off though, and seemed to be fine.

The other creatures of the farm are a horse, 4 cows, 5 pigs, many cats, and a baby goat. There are 2 mommy and 2 baby cows ... and the mommies are both pregnant again as well. They don't really do all that much but stand around and eat, but it was neat to be able to get up close to them. The pigs do pretty much the same - eat - but are slightly more active about it, pushing each other around for a place at the trough, or climbing over and around each other. Or blowing bubbles in their water bucket. The goat was the friendliest of the creatures (next to Duke) - he'd stand up on his hind legs with his hooves on the top of his fence to be petted, and to nibble at your jacket (he'd paw at you if you weren't paying attention). I let him chew on my hand as well - his teeth were flat, not sharp, so they couldn't do any damage. My coat seemed to be the one he liked to nibble on the best ... perhaps 'red' is his favorite flavour. Then he'd run around in the pen for a bit in a prancy way, then climb to the top of his 'mountain' (an overturned plastic patio chair). Apparently when the horse is inside, next to the goat, he'll stick his head down into the goat's pen for a kiss. Aww.

Thus ends my tale of a country excursion.

Tis the season ....

... for watching movies! And there are quite a few good ones out now - some that I've been looking forward to for ages, others that I watched because they were convenient, but was pleasantly surprised by. I don't know when I last watched this many movies in theatres - probably a good thing that I don't do it too often. I suck at writing movie reviews, however, but go check out Sarah's reviews of Rent and Narnia - I agree with her on them. Movies I have seen recently so far and reccoment - Rent, Harry Potter, Narnia, and Chicken Little. Just saw Chicken Little tonight, and I really enjoyed it - it was hilarious. Good music too, with new BNL, karaoke singing by the characters, and a Five for Fighting song that I'd never heard of called 'All I Know'. I really really liked this last song -its beautiful. So I'm posting the lyrics (although I realize that it loses something without hearing it), and I encourage you to check it out (and the movies too - especially Rent! heehee ;).

All I Know (Five for Fighting)
I bruise you
You bruise me
We both bruise so easily
Too easily to let it show
I love you and that's all I know

And all my plans keep fallin' through
All my plans, they depend on you
Depend on you to help them grow
I love you and that's all I know

When the singer's gone
Let the song go on
There's a fine line between
The darkness and the dawn
They say in the darkest night
There's a light beyond

And the ending always comes at last
Endings always come too fast
They come too fast
And they pass too slow
I love you and that's all

It's really all I know
It's all I know

It's all I know

Winter Sunset Sky - Aurora

On second thought...

... while UTGC is definitely an event to put you in a seasonal mood, at the same time, nothing like hearing the song 'Walking 'Round in Women's Underwear' (to the tune of 'Winter Wonderland') on MIX99.9 to put you in the spirit. Heehee.

Lacy things.... missing .... :)

Go! Tell it on the mountain!

... Over the hills! And EVERYWHERE!

Thanks Talibah - thats *still* in my head! Ah well ... good stuff. I took in the University of Toronto's Gospel Choir's Christmas concert this Saturday night, and an excellent show it was. If that doesn't put you in a Christmas-y spirit, nothing will.

In other news, I'm heading off to London this afternoon for the evening, to go and be sociable with the library crowd - its their last week of classes, yay! As of Friday, they will have survived the first term of library school. A very notable achievement, indeed. :) I've heard that they got buried under 45cm of snow on Friday... heres hoping that the weather's not as bad anymore, or at least the 401 isn't. Planning to be back in the land of much less snow by tomorrow evening.
